Destroy Concrete Blocks: Senator Miriam
SENATOR Miriam Defensor-Santiago has raised the necessity to “destroy” the concrete blocks reportedly laid by Chinese forces in Panatag Shoal off Zambales, which is within the Philippine exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
She made the remark following the revelation made by Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin that the Philippine.Air Force had spotted concrete blocks in the disputed Panatag Shoal (or Scarborough Shoal) which appears to be “a prelude to construction.”
Panatag Shoal is part of the contested isles, atolls, and reefs in the South China Sea or West Philippine Sea. Four other countries also lay overlapping claims in the area. These are Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
“We have to continue tearing those structures down. And then we have to continue protesting in international fora so that we cannot be charged with tolerance of the practice which will be taken against us in international law,” Santiago said in a chance interview.
