Taiwan casts its tech prowess

Taiwan, one of the six claimants to the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea (West Philippine Sea) has launched a mobile telecommunications system for its coast guard forces.

Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom set up the NT$7-million (P9.597 million) system for its Coast Guard personnel, Taiwan's Central News Agency reported.

According to the CNA report, the telecom service may cover Taiping Island, which has an area of 0.49 square kilometers. Taiping is on of the contested Spratly Islands.

It added Taiwan has posted more than 100 coast guard members on the island.
Boat crews in surrounding waters can also avail of the system, the CNA report said.
Other claimants to the Spratlys are the Philippines, China, Malaysia, Brunei and Vietnam.
